Cello

British cellist Jonathan Dormand, praised for his “burnished mahogany sound” (Boston Arts Fuse), is the cellist of the acclaimed Verona Quartet. The Verona Quartet has forged a reputation as one of the most distinguished ensembles before the public today.

 Jonathan has appeared as a soloist in recitals and as a chamber musician across four continents. He has appeared at Venues such as London’s Wigmore Hall and Southbank Centre, The Paris Philharmonie, The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center.. He has been a guest musician at major international festivals including Verbier, Ravinia, Chamber Music Northwest, Rockport Summer Music, Ottawa Chamberfest and Bravo! Vail, among others.

Jonathan has regularly been invited to serve as guest principal cello with orchestras including the Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the latter of which included tours of Asia and South America. Jonathan has also worked as a guest musician with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and has also contributed to various musical scores for motion pictures.

As the cellist of the Verona Quartet,  Jonathan has recorded albums released on Azica, Bright Shiny Things and Dynamic Records. In 2020 the Verona Quartet was awarded Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award in recognition of their achievements in the field of chamber music. Jonathan also won prizes at the Isang Yun International Cello Competition 2012 in South Korea and received a Major Incentive Grant from the Pierre Fournier Award 2015 in London.

Jonathan studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester UK under the guidance of Hannah Roberts. He furthered his studies at New England Conservatory in Boston working with Laurence Lesser and Paul Katz, and continuing with Ralph Kirshbaum at the University of Southern California.

Jonathan is in demand as a teacher, and has given masterclasses around the world. He was previously on the cello faculty at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and  currently serves as Artist-Teacher at the Oberlin College and Conservatory.
